Enjoying Newquay's Coast This Summer: Staying Safe While Making the Most of Our Beaches

There's a reason millions of people visit Cornwall every year. From golden sands and rolling waves to dramatic coastal paths and hidden coves, our coastline is one of the most beautiful places in the UK.
Whether you're a local resident, a holidaymaker, or taking a break from your desk at C-Space, spending time by the sea is one of the best ways to enjoy the summer months. However, the coast can be unpredictable, and a little preparation can go a long way in helping everyone stay safe.

Here are some simple tips to help you make the most of Newquay's beaches and coastline this summer.
Know Your Beach Flags
If you're heading into the water, always take a moment to check the beach flags.
Red and yellow flags mark the area supervised by lifeguards and are the safest place to swim and bodyboard.
Black and white chequered flags indicate areas designated for surfboards and other watercraft.
Red flags mean the sea is dangerous and you should not enter the water.
Where possible, always choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags.
Understand Rip Currents
Rip currents are one of the most common dangers around the Cornish coast. They are powerful channels of water moving away from the shore and can quickly carry swimmers out to sea.
If you find yourself caught in a rip current:
Stay calm.
Don't try to swim directly back to shore.
Swim parallel to the beach until you are free of the current.
Raise your hand and call for help if needed.
Knowing what to do before entering the water can make a huge difference.
Respect the Ocean
The sea conditions can change quickly, even on sunny days.
Before heading out:
Check local weather and surf forecasts.
Be aware of tides and tide times.
Never overestimate your swimming ability.
Keep children within arm's reach near the water.
Remember that even experienced swimmers and surfers should treat the ocean with respect.
Stay Safe in the Sun
Cornwall's sea breeze can make it easy to underestimate the strength of the sun.
To avoid sunburn and heat-related illness:
Apply high-factor sunscreen regularly.
Wear a hat and sunglasses.
Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Seek shade during the hottest part of the afternoon.
A great beach day is one that doesn't end with sunburn.
Explore Our Coastal Paths Responsibly
The South West Coast Path offers some of the most spectacular views in the country, but the cliffs can be fragile and unstable.
When exploring:
Stay on marked paths.
Keep away from cliff edges.
Supervise children and dogs carefully.
Wear suitable footwear.
The views are incredible, but safety should always come first.
Help Protect Our Beaches
We all play a role in keeping Cornwall's coastline beautiful.
Simple actions can make a big difference:
Take your litter home.
Avoid leaving disposable BBQs on the beach.
Use designated bins where available.
Respect wildlife and nesting areas.
Consider joining a local beach clean.
By looking after our coastline today, we help ensure future generations can enjoy it too.
Looking After Your Wellbeing by the Sea
Spending time near the coast isn't just good for physical health—it can be great for mental wellbeing too.
A walk along the beach, a lunchtime swim, or simply sitting and listening to the waves can help reduce stress and improve mood. It's one of the many reasons so many people choose to live, work, and visit Newquay.
At C-Space, we're fortunate to be surrounded by some of Cornwall's most stunning coastal scenery. Whether you're working remotely, visiting the area, or taking a well-earned break, we encourage everyone to enjoy the coast safely and responsibly this summer.
After all, the best beach days are the ones that leave you with great memories and a healthy respect for the incredible environment right on our doorstep.
